Rana Sikandar Hayat Ending Saturday Holiday in Punjab Schools

Rana Sikandar Hayat Minister Education Punjab has indicated on social media that he is thinking about the cancellation of Saturday Holiday for Students in Punjab Schools.

In a move to make up for lost academic days due to unexpected closures from severe smog and other disruptions, the Punjab School Education Department is reportedly planning to abolish the traditional Saturday holiday in schools. This adjustment would change the current school schedule from five days a week to six, a change aimed at recovering the reduced academic year and ensuring sufficient instructional time for students, as reported by 24NewsHD TV channel. Shortened Academic Year Spurs Action

Educational experts have pointed out that unplanned holidays have significantly shortened the academic year in Punjab, which now stands at merely 112 days compared to the international standard of 245 days. This alarming reduction has sparked concerns over the educational preparedness of students, particularly those in grades 9 and 10 who face crucial exams ahead.

Impact of Environmental and Seasonal Challenges

The ongoing smog crisis in the region, which led to the unprecedented closure of schools in early November, along with the trend of extending winter breaks in recent years, pose a continuous threat to the academic calendar. With the expected winter holidays in December, further loss of instructional days seems inevitable, raising alarms among education authorities about the possible long-term impacts on student learning.

Challenges in Adapting to Unplanned Breaks

The situation has been compounded by difficulties in shifting to alternative teaching methods such as online classes, which have not been successfully implemented owing to various challenges. Moreover, the government’s reluctance to require teachers to work during these unscheduled breaks has added to the strain on the educational system.

The proposed shift to a six-day school week by the Punjab School Education Department aims to mitigate these challenges by maximizing the use of available days for teaching and learning. This initiative seeks to ensure that despite the disruptions, students receive the necessary academic support to continue their education effectively.
